Every student is required to take up at least one subject in combined humanities when they are in Secondary school as well as Junior College. They usually have a choice to select from three of following subjects. They are Geography, History and social studies. Geography focuses on the study of the lands, features, inhabitants and phenomena of the Earth. Students always have the misconception that it is very much similar to Science.
Hence, they are not too concern over it as they have been studying Science since Secondary school. However, Geography stands on its own and without having a good grasp of the concepts, students will have difficulty in scoring well. This is where home tuition makes a difference.
1. How do I enroll?
Students must complete a Registration Form and acknowledge the Terms and Conditions of their enrollment. Parental signature is required for students under the age of 18. Students will also pay these fees in Singapore (per subject such as H1, H2 Level Geography tuition):
Course Fees: Billed monthly and prorated for the number of lessons that month
The material fee is applied to the printing of class notes and other papers for the school year. The material and course fees are not refundable.
2. What is the class size?
The maximum class size is between 12 and 14 students. A maximum of 2 spots will be available for students who need to attend a replacement class. Scheduled classes will commence with a minimum of 4 students.
3. Are there extra classes during the school holidays?
During school holidays (March, June, September, November and December), there may be Boot camps to help our students prepare for upcoming geography exams to prepare for the next school year. These lessons are part of the course and students are expected to participate. The fees for these extra lessons will be prorated accordingly and reflected in the fees invoiced. Students will be informed of the class schedule at least 8 weeks in advance.
4. Are there classes during Public Holidays?
There are no classes during Public Holidays but affected lessons may be replaced. This is because the tutors follow a syllabus and those whose class falls on a Public Holiday will miss out one lesson. These A level or O level Geography tuition centers will work with the students and tutor to find an agreeable time to replace the cancelled lesson.
5. How can I withdraw from tuition centers?
Students must submit the Withdrawal Form at least few weeks before the last lesson.
Students absent for two or more weeks without informing the center in advance will be considered as having withdrawn from the course and the deposit will be forfeited. To continue, the student must top up the entirety of the deposit.
6. How to pay fees?
These tuition agencies accept cash, cheque or internet bank transfers. Cheques should be crossed and made payable to the center name.
7. Is there anything else you should know?
These geography tuition agencies take students' learning experience seriously. They reserve the right to refuse to teach any student whose behavior at our premises causes annoyance, distress or offence to others. Persistent offenders will be issued a warning letter and be dismissed from the center. The balance of paid tuition fees of dismissed students will not be refunded.
8. Is there a trial class?
Yes, there is. Some offer paid trials which are pro-rated according to standard monthly fees.
Students can make up for the h2 geography session they missed with another class of the same subject on a space availability basis, e.g. replace the Friday class with a Saturday one. Students, who are unable to make up for the same subject may also choose to replace the class with another subject on a space availability basis, e.g. replace the class they cannot attend with another class.
All make up or replacement lessons must be completed within 2 weeks of the originally scheduled class or the option of the make-up or replacement class will be forfeited.
Firstly, home tuition allocates time for students to do their revision. Let’s face it, nobody likes studying. Most of us after school will probably end up playing and having fun. With a home tutor though, students will be granted that extra hour, is it once or twice a week to do their revision. Furthermore, students won’t be on your own. There will be someone beside them who will be able to guide and motivate them. This will definitely help to develop a strong interest for any upcoming tests or examinations.
Secondly, any Geography class in Singapore like A level geography tuition revolves around understanding and concepts in order to answer the questions. It is not purely about memorizing, it involves actual application too. This is something a tutor can help students with by providing them with explanations and examples. Yes, school teachers will definitely do their part in this too. However, won’t it be an advantage for you to widen your knowledge with more information from a tutor? This can potentially help you especially in the long questions.
I thought it would be good to take an opinion on the topic from the parents, school teachers, private tuition teachers and of course the students to make my points for the debate stronger and much better. When I asked the parents they said, since children need to give more and more time to their studies and as parents cannot always provide time to help their children with their studies, so private tuition classes for A level geography after school support them in that regard.
They also said, the schools didn't teach the students properly. The schools in turn felt it was not possible for the school teachers to keep a watch over every student's performance. The school teachers replied, saying private tuition's were a mere waste of time and that what the students were taught in class was more than enough to go into the depth of the subjects. Moreover, some of the students could not concentrate in class because of what they were taught in class and what they learnt at their tuition classes which were clashing with each other.
After asking some of the private tutors, the same question the response I got was that the School teachers were not taking proper care of each of the students. And, there were many students who hesitated to raise question school teachers in front of the entire class. Whereas, in private tuition classes they were able to clarify their queries freely without any hesitation as the numbers of students in the tuition classes was less as compared to classes in schools. And, when the students were finally asked, many of them said that they found it difficult to balance the time and pressure of studies between school and private tutors.
Thirdly, with a home tutor, students will be able to receive full and undivided attention. In other words, lessons can be catered towards their needs. They don’t have to go through every single chapter if they don’t feel the need to. Instead, they can focus on the areas where they are weaker in or require further guidance with. This allows lessons to be more interactive compared to the traditional classroom setting.
Geography is not a difficult subject when you are able to see how the Earth works. After that, students would just need to transfer that knowledge and apply them onto the essay questions. It may be quite a challenge at first, but with proper guidance A level geography lesson, they will be able to overcome the odds. This is where a Tuition center and qualified tutors in Singapore is ever ready to assist you!
